Why you Should Support the Local SU Music Scene
Are you tired of the typical college frat party? Is the DJ’s cover burning a hole in your wallet? Well then read on about Syracuse’s many hidden treasures that come out to play on the weekends.
People usually associate our school with the bitter cold. However, Syracuse University is more than just the ice box it proves to be; It is the holder of a very prominent music scene. Even bedroom pop artist Clairo got her start right here at Syracuse! SU has also led to the rise of Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers, as well as an American music legend, Lou Reed of The Velvet Underground.
With such a rich history in music, it is no wonder that Syracuse is currently buzzing with local talent. Take senior Gillian Pelkonen for example, she just released an EP titled Six Ten on streaming platforms under the pseudonym Gill with the G and it is phenomenal! We definitely recommend checking her out. The Syracuse band No New Friends is also amazing, blending traditional pop music with their affinity for jazz. Syracuse University is bursting with talented artists. While we can’t shout out every single one, here are a few you should check out: Hail, Mary, Mollie Edsell, Shallow Alcove, FLOTUS, Gabriel Milluzzo.
Wondering how you can see all of these great acts live? Syracuse is also an amazing area filled with local venues. While crowding into a damp basement to hear live music doesn’t exactly sound appealing, it’s actually a really great time. Being only a couple of feet away from the artists makes you really appreciate how talented they are. A couple of popular venues are Coney Island, The Hotbox, and The Deli. Additionally, Syracuse’s famous Funkin’ Waffles loves to host SU acts. So hit that joint, grab some brownie waffles and enjoy a show downtown.
Putting on a show is hard work. This is where organizations like Orange Music Group come in as everyone’s life savior. The Orange Music Group books talent from around Syracuse and Central New York to come perform for us students. A lot of these concerts benefit charity, therefore if you see a performance, you are showing support for a good cause- bonus!
If you’re looking for stereotypical college music, look no further than the six incredible A Capella groups we have here at Syracuse University. There’s Orange Appeal, The Mandarins, Ottotunes, Main Squeeze, Oy Capella, and Groove Stand. These groups are extremely talented and constantly performing around campus. Orange Appeal is having its fall a capella concert titled Spooktacular on October 26th at 8:00 in Hendricks Chapel. These gentlemen are phenomenal performers, singers, and overall guys, so come on down!
*Keep an eye out for the guy on stage in an electric blue tie, that’s me!
With all of the ways you can support your local ‘Cuse music scene, there’s really no excuse to not see any of these amazing performers. Unless you hate having fun or something... that’s none of our business tho.
