Why We All Want to Go the Fuck Home
The dreaded homesick feeling has hit again. No matter how much you love ‘Cuse, all of us get nostalgic for that cozy place we call home at some point or another. As the days get increasingly cold and grey, we all yearn to be sitting in our comfy warm beds we’ve had since our tween years. The end of the semester is in sight, but not quite near enough for most of us to see the light at the end of the tunnel just yet. So, since we’re stuck here until Thanksgiving break, here are Jerk’s top tips for how to survive the rest of the bitter semester.
First of all, parent’s weekend just passed, and that probably put you in your bag. Either your parents came to visit and it made you remember how much you miss them, or they didn’t come and it depressed you even more. Even if you don’t exactly miss your parents or guardians, the weekend definitely has big family vibes and sometimes it feels a little strange if you’re on your own. So when you find yourself missing family, call home! Even a twenty minute conversation filled with talk of the upcoming holidays is bound to relieve some stress and loneliness.
The disappointing reality is that we still have a month left before Thanksgiving break. So if the loneliness is really eating you up, take a weekend trip back home! Let yourself relax after the absolute shitshow that was midterms, sit around the dinner table with your parents, and just enjoy the comforting company. Savor a home cooked meal while making sure to definitely steal some leftovers to bring back to school with you—you’ll be happy you did.
If going back home is out of the question, don’t give up just yet! Treat yourself to a chill weekend here in ‘Cuse. Get under some fluffy blankets, binge watch Netflix, and Doordash your favorite home cooked meal from one of the many choices of restaurants. When it comes to mental health, there are no justifications needed. It is important to do whatever helps YOU relax and de-stress. The more stressful school gets, the more intense homesickness gets, so please, take some time to chill.
Finally, do something fun! Hanging out with friends and being social is a great way to distract yourself from feeling homesick. The saying “time flies when you’re having fun” really is true. If you can make time to do something fun with friends, it will make the weeks seem like they’re passing faster. Making fun plans will also give you things to look forward to between now and break. Don’t forget that even though homesickness is at all time high right now, there’s little time left in the semester. Enjoy the company of the old and new friends you’ve made at school, and remember, you’ll be begging to come back once the New Year rolls around.
