Fall Semester: So, What Happens Next?

The spring wasn’t the same this year.

Syracuse’s empty streets were a harsh contrast to the amazing shitshow that is Mayfest, Block Party, and graduation. COVID-19 has completely changed the structure of school, work, and so many other parts of society. No part of online school was fun. Honestly, Zoom lectures can kiss our asses. There has already been talk about cancelling in-person classes for the fall, and our hearts are breaking for everyone. Finishing your final college class in your childhood bedroom isn’t exactly ideal.

So, what happens next? Syracuse, as of now, hasn’t made any big decisions about next semester, but is doing as much as possible to stay open for the fall. As much as we love everything about ‘Cuse, a global pandemic is probably a valid reason to keep things closed. Here’s where everything stands as of now.

Many colleges are doing their best to plan for in-person classes in the upcoming semester. California state schools however, have already planned for online classes to avoid another potential outbreak in the fall. With over one million coronavirus cases in the US, we still haven’t gotten close to fixing the problem, and we will have to take social distancing very seriously for a long time. Thanks to America’s terrible planning abilities, we’re kind of stuck in this weird position. Despite this, some states are phasing in their plans to slowly open up businesses and restaurants. Groups will still be limited and masks will still be worn in most settings. Parts of New York, including upstate, have begun loosening restrictions as of  May 15th. However, some parts of NY are still seeing high numbers of cases and will not reopen, according to Cuomo’s “Pause Order” (NBC New York).

If we do end up coming back to school (fingers crossed), even with social distancing measures put into place, will we have football? Tailgating? East Adams?? We guess thousands of drunk students in a crowded space might not exactly be the most sanitary. Because most colleges are moving classes online for the summer, sports (and tailgates ugh) will most likely be delayed.

But just think, if things are pushed back... how insane would a football/basketball combo season be? Fall may be a little more boring than we’re used to, but remember it’s all for our own wellbeing. Don’t forget all there is to look forward to and use this time to get some bomb outfits for next year, find new music, make your own zine, and keep reading JERK of course ;)
