The Tik Tok Lesbian Drama Literally No One Asked For

Ever since her first appearance on the hit Lifetime show Dance Moms at just eight years old, JoJo Siwa has become a global sensation. Her outgoing personality and totally out-there sense of style made her the dancer viewers loved to hate, prompting her breakout single “Boomerang” about blocking out the haters. Kind of badass, don't you think?

After leaving the show in 2016 to get her bag with Nickelodeon, JoJo’s fame skyrocketed. However, much of the media’s spotlight has shined on her personal life instead of her professional accomplishments. Typical. When she came out in January 2021 and announced she was dating Kylie Prew, everyone was buzzing and obsessing over every aspect of their relationship. After they broke up, there were almost immediate whispers regarding Siwa and a potential new girl, Avery Cyrus.

JoJo and Avery confirmed their romance earlier this year, and we’ve all seen the complete hot mess express that has ensued. Fans have meticulously cataloged timelines of the relationships, and the story quickly became added to the famous genre of tea known as lesbian TikTok drama. The hashtag has 18 million views and no shortage of opinions; this is the internet after all. Every person on the internet seems entitled to share their very groundbreaking thoughts on JoJo and her new girlfriend.

While some people claim to be well intentioned— whether they see themselves as warriors of the internet protecting JoJo from being used for clout or defending Avery’s

ex-girlfriend’s feelings— they continuously violate their privacy and listen about as well as the internet listens to women in general. Not good.

JoJo has been under the unforgiving scrutiny of the public eye for the majority of her life, with virtually no part of her growth as a teen undocumented. Remember the struggles we all went through growing up and finding ourselves as young adults? All the unfortunate fashion choices and music we thought was good? We shiver at the thought. Now imagine compounding that bullshit with the stress of everything being open season to 11 year olds who just learned how to swear for the first time! Not only that, but breakups and new relationships are hard enough without feeling the need to justify them to a random person on the internet with the username bobduncansgf69.

At the end of the day, JoJo’s life is nobody’s business but her own, and she doesn’t owe any of us an explanation. Period. So the next time the urge to post an elaborate conspiracy theory on the reasons when JoJo and Avery ‘really’ got together seems too strong to ignore, consider doing literally anything else instead :)
