Killer Crush

Yeah, you read that right. I spent hours on Twitter trying to figure out why so many people are stanning literal murders. And now I want to rip my eyes out. I went in thinking I was going to look into a very ~niche~ corner of the internet... nope! So many people have accounts completely dedicated to their favorite killers. I’ve seen Ted Bundy merch, Jeffrey Dahmer fan edits, tweets about dreaming of Richard Ramirez, and SO MUCH MORE.

But one question is still nagging at me: Why??!! What is the allure? Why are these people seemingly in love with these objectively evil people? There are hotter and objectively better celebrities to thirst over and you chose someone who literally ate people. I thought something we could all agree on is that murder is bad. So many of these accounts have the empty phrases like “I do not condone” in their bio. But where is the line between loving a killer and condoning the killings?

For the TCC (true crime community), that line is more than blurred, it's dead. Twitter accounts like @dahmersdrama and @tiarnievan (yes I’m calling them out, they need to be stopped) have hundreds of followers and their content is all about being in love with serial killers. And I know in this internet age hundreds doesn’t seem like anything, but think about it in terms of real life. If there was a crowd of 500 people all gathered around talking about how much they love and idolize these killers, you would be concerned. (or at least I hope you would).

This is something that NEEDS to be stopped. Why is Twitter providing a platform for people to post content glorifying murderers? And if you thought it was justTwitter, buckle the fuck up. There are accounts all over Instagram, Tiktok, and Reddit (the black hole that is Reddit I'm honestly not surprised).

Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu ~love~ cashing in on heinous crimes and the trauma of victims. They eat it up. The Dahmer series on Netflix is just the latest installment. Before that, there was the “Night Stalker'' documentary, the Son of Sam docuseries, and let's not forget the Ted Bundy film starring everyone's favorite teen heartthrob Zac Efron. So maybe next time you’re about to click the new docuseries on the Netflix top 10 list, think about why you're watching it. And if it's because you're thirsting after a killer, then turn off your laptop and GO TOUCH GRASS!!!
