How I Met Your Father is Not Funny. Ugh.
When are television companies going to realize that some shows are just too good to remake?
How I met your Mother is a show full of raw comedy that never fails to make us laugh out loud. The stark banter between the characters makes it seem like they aren’t even acting. On the other hand, this new remake How I Met Your Father is… lacking. In fact, we didn’t even *nose exhale* once. Not once. Not even a soft one. That is criminal.
It felt extremely forced - full of jokes we found funny about ten years ago when our humor was far less developed. The only thing that kept us watching passed Episode One was to answer the classic question: Who ends up with who?
Look, don’t get us wrong, we LOVE Hilary Duff. She reminds us of our iconic early 2000s childhood and her energy is just amazing, but she probably could’ve done more with this role. Her comedic timing was subpar. It wasn’t even in the same ballpark as the iconic original version of the show, not even the outfield or the parking lot behind the fence.
The problem is that remaking these iconic shows is next to impossible. People ADORE How I Met Your Mother. They live for Barney’s endless sex jokes and Lily & Marshall’s picture-perfect relationship. So trying to recreate that adoration was the first mistake. And the thing is - THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS. Shows are recreated and they always suck. We don’t know why showrunners can’t ever just let a good thing be.
Take Pretty Little Liars for example. That show has two failed spinoffs. TWO. And you want to know the best part?? THERE IS ANOTHER ONE COMING. We have second-hand embarrassment at this point. We already know A is going to be someone’s evil twin and everyone is going to be wildly disappointed because all of the evidence pointed directly to the main character. So why bother even making the show?
Oh, and they completely ruined Gossip Girl. We really are struggling to find the point on that reboot. Why do you feel the need to remake a show that was already iconic across multiple generations? And Sex and the City?? There are just so many shows that fall into this trope and we are DONE.
The bottom line is that these television companies are hungry for the next paycheck and will do whatever they can to produce popular shows that will give them the edge over another streaming service or channel. They couldn’t care less that the remake sucked. Because we still watch it. Every single time.
Now please excuse us while we continue to binge How I Met Your Father. See what we mean?
