The Rise of Frat Weddings

Graphic by Anika Dua

Picture a bride in a white dress with a bouquet, groomsmen and bridesmaids, lovely vows, and… a frat house venue? If you’ve got that in your head, you’ve just imagined a frat wedding - a literal real thing where two people partake in unholy matrimony by the grace of… a non-ordained frat guy.

Obviously, frat weddings are very frat and very college, and we’d expect nothing less. At Syracuse, however, frat weddings are few and far between. We at Jerk hear that they’ve expanded to some sports teams starting to hold weddings at their houses. Everyone’s looking for a good party, and weddings seem to be the way to go. Themed weddings are especially fun, because a trashy wedding is obviously better than a regular wedding. The idea of having “extravagant” frat weddings has exploded in the past few months thanks to TikTok star Alix Earle.

On January 27th, she posted a series of vlogs documenting her own meticulously planned out frat wedding. They began with a statement saying that she was getting ready to tie the knot, and that she’s been “waiting for this day for so long,” which obviously attracted a ton of attention. She was literally dressed in a floor length white ballgown-style wedding dress, and had a few bridesmaids in matching pink dresses to top it all off. The point was to have a “cheesy, fun wedding.” Bizarre.

It’s up to you to decide if you would love a frat wedding of your very own, or if you think they’re another dumb excuse to have a theme party. The idea is… oddly sweet– but we at Jerk definitely still think it’s weird that this is a thing. There may be some charm in it yet - blacking out and matrimony, hand in hand. Find that special someone and get planning!
