We Need to Talk About Baby Tik Tok
So unless our Tik Tok algorithm is weirdly specific, I’m sure you’ve all seen your fair share of baby and family Tik Toks. Some of these accounts have over a million followers, and all the content is centered around a cute baby or family. They range from documenting funny moments to sharing parenting tips. Wholesome and clean content, right? Wrong. Putting baby fever aside, there are actually some serious questions to be raised about content like this.
Now this genre of Tik Tokers is not a new concept. Anyone remember family Youtubers? Yeah, baby Tik Tok is just the same thing but on a different platform. The content itself is cute and innocent. Who doesn’t smile seeing a video of a baby doing something goofy? But if we’re watching them, that means the rest of the world is too. These children, not even old enough to attend school, have become public figures exposed to scrutiny and criticism from complete strangers. These cute and happy moments should be treasured as private memories, not broadcasted for Tik Tok content.
People often forget that these children will one day grow up. How will they feel about their childhood being shared with the whole world? Would they like it? Would they hate it? We won’t know the answers for a while. Right now they barely know how to even communicate that they are hungry. Instead they’ll babble incoherently or maybe throw a fit. Don’t forget though, we have to make sure to film that too.
