A College Expert Speaks Her Truth
Graphics by Caroline Connerton
Dear highschoolers,
Don’t you find it so annoying when someone in college speaks to you like a child because they think they’re so experienced in their higher education? Well that is what I am not going to do. You see, I have only been in college for about six weeks yet I still have a lot to share. I was in high school a mere five months ago so I’m still adjusting to college life. Here are some things I have learned so far:
1. Just because a class doesn’t take attendance, does not mean you shouldn’t go.
Honestly speaking, I haven’t missed a class yet because I actually came to college to receive a higher education. However, everyone I know who has skipped a class has regretted it. I promise, it is much harder to learn on your own, so if that is your niche, maybe rethink where that tuition is going towards.
2. You don’t have to go out every day. You don’t even have to go out every weekend.
Going out is genuinely exhausting. Personally, my social battery dies after about half an hour when I go out. I’m not saying that I don’t have fun, I do, but I can guarantee you that fun isn’t only had in sweaty basements while being pushed around by people blowing smoke in your face. Have a chill night in with some friends and order pizza.
3. DON’T ORDER FOOD ALL THE TIME!!!
Seriously, the amount of take out bags I see on my way to pick up my amazon packages is insane. I understand that maybe there isn’t a dining hall too close to you but believe it or not, those fees add up to your parents’ DoorDash accounts (just ask for some gift cards for those big holidays and you’ll be set for at least two weeks).
4. You’re going to be walking a lot, just deal with it.
Generally speaking, college requires a lot of walking. Get that exercise in because the calories you lose by walking is exactly the same amount of money you would be spending on Ubers if you didn’t. Walking is good for the soul and only sometimes your feet get covered in blisters from walking thirty blocks from the inner city back to campus in heels. But that’s unlikely to happen if you are in any way smart.
5. You will make friends.
It may not happen on your first day or maybe not even your first week, but rest assured, your friends will find you. You are going to meet way too many people and become terribly overwhelmed by how many people have introduced themselves to you. If you forget all of their names, don’t worry, they’ve probably forgotten yours too. Friends and friend groups may not be formed overnight but give it some time, you will find your people.
Well little ones, I hope you’ve enjoyed my words of advice. College is nothing to stress about, seriously. You get to make so many new friends and get a fresh start because, let’s face it, high school sucks. In college, you get to learn new things that you would never even think of learning! Be present, stay positive, and surround yourself with as many opportunities that come your way. Stay in school kids (or don’t, senior year really ends when you get into college).
Love,
A sincere college freshman.
