WERW Hits Play: A Launch Party That Turned Up The Volume

WERW Radio, an SU student-run independent radio station, had their launch party on Saturday, November 8. Celebrating community, creativity, and campus talent, students came together to showcase their work and underscore just how wonderfully unique our campus culture is. Student organizations and vendors such as Awkward Fish, Ratgirl Vintage, Passion Fruit Studios, University Union, Crossroads Collective, Rae Searne, and our very own Jerk Magazine were all there to bring their own unique flair and artistry.

The atmosphere was an electric mix of anticipation and enthusiasm from everyone in attendance. Photographers buzzed around Schine Underground, videographers captured the stage, and even our very lovely mascot Otto made an appearance.

Musical performances anchored the night, beginning with Grace Ferguson, whose indie lo-fi sound had the crowd in the palm of her hand. A particular song, which she explained was about “life-altering choices”, particularly spoke to me in that totally-terrified-to-graduate-soon kind of way. She was backed by a stellar group of guitarists behind her, adding to a beautifully ambient experience. With a fabulous cover of Gracie Abrams’ hit “That’s So True” to boot, the night was shaping up to be a wonderful space to discover up-and-coming musicians from our very own backyard.

Then came the headliner band of the evening, The Army, The Navy. This female-led twosome captivated everyone with their delicate harmonies and Billie Eilish-esque vocal tone. The dreamlike ambiance blended electric and acoustic guitar. The room fell silent as the group moved through their setlist. The audience was visibly entranced and moved by the music. The group shouted out all of the music majors on campus as well, shining a spotlight on the creatives in this school that can unfortunately get overlooked in such a large campus environment. It was refreshing to be in an environment that supported young artists and creatives.

Overall, the WERW Launch Party was a vibrant success that brought together students interested in art and music. We at Jerk were so excited to be a part of it!
