We’re Pretty Sure Travis Scott is the Next Yeezy
You may know Travis Scott as the headliner for Block Party 2017, but he’s so much more than just a guy in front of a weird moving owl. According to journalist Frank Guan, when thinking about Travis Scott, “think Kanye, but if Kanye had grown up listening to Kanye.” This begs the question, is Scott the next Kanye?
The parallels between Scott and Yeezy run deep. Both were raised in large American cities on neither the West nor East Coast – Scott hails from Houston and Yeezy is a Chicago native. Neither graduated from college, and both received their big breaks once they made it to major cities. In terms of their music, the two artists rely not only on their curation of others’ works as producers, but have incredibly unique vocals and lyrical capabilities, too. Yeezy and Scott have featured each other on their projects – West helped produce Scott’s debut solo mixtape, Rodeo, and Scott helped produce Yeezus. And, of course, the each have a Kardashian on their arm.
Just like Yeezy, Scott has established major roots in the fashion world. January 2017 marked the launch of Scott’s 19-piece menswear capsule collection for Helmut Lang, which draws inspiration from his hometown in Texas. Scott’s connection to Nike began this past May, as the face of the VaporMax campaign, and on October 27, 2017, he’s launching a line with Australian fashion label Ksubi, which also nods to his “Rodeo” days.
If you pay attention to any news all week, let it be this. On Monday, Travis Scott posted this picture on Instagram announcing that he will be doing a major collaboration with Nike. This comes after months of rumors and leaks. Here’s our “first take.”
“WORK-IN-PROGRESS,” Scott’s caption blared. He went on to include the hashtags #af1 #teamnike.
Over the summer, Scott teased an unreleased model of Air Force 1s called “the Cactus Jack,” which allows the iconic Nike swoosh to be interchanged with other swooshes of different patterns and designs. This is apparently one of the designs featured in the collab. When was the last time we were this excited for a shoe line? Probably before the Yeezy Boost 350s dropped. *shrugs*
As of now, the rapper has chosen not to elaborate on exactly what will be included in the line. According to leaked info via @py_rates on Twitter, a “one-stop trustworthy cook group,” the collaboration apparently consists of two Air Force 1’s and a jersey. A jersey? How radically different from Yeezy’s lines of oversized hoodies, variations of military designs and, as of Season 4, an 18k yellow gold jewelry line.
Could this be the “Antidote” for all the negative press surrounding his recent baby news with Kylie Jenner? Either way, it all but confirms our suspicion that Travis Scott is on track to dethroning King Yeezus.
