How many times do people in their teens and twenties change their aesthetic? Five times? Ten? Who the fuck cares. When you are young, exploring different styles and fashion is like putting on a new version of yourself and seeing which one fits the best. Billie Eilish is no different.

Breaking away from her classic black and green color palette and baggy attire, the 19-year-old Grammy-award winner had fans foaming at the mouth with her new bleach-blonde hair and vintage lingerie featured on the cover of British Vogue’s June issue. Instead of getting support for strutting her stuff and delivering a confident interview, controversy ignited because of Eilish’s choice to show off the body she had concealed from the public for years.

That’s fucked.

Body positivity is about encouraging people of all shapes and sizes to love their beautiful bodies and wear whatever makes them feel comfortable. An icon of the movement, the singer initially never strayed from her relaxed-fit look, challenging fashion gender norms. She was quoted mentioning her body insecurities as the main reason for her loose-fitted clothing. And the one time she wore a tank top, the public’s reactions were not anything out of the ordinary in the music industry. Haters swarmed her with negativity for wearing something so revealing as someone who is not a size 0. Others called her brave for doing so.

But Eilish wasn’t “brave” for wearing a tank top that day, she was just living her everyday life. Why should wearing clothes that make you feel comfortable be a courageous act? And why do women repeatedly get put down for changing up their look to something more “daring”?

When Harry Styles went from a boy-band baby to a sexy, feminine solo act, he was praised for experimenting with fashion and for defying gender norms. Eilish changes her look and is suddenly seen as betraying her fan base? Hypocritical if you ask me.

However, it doesn’t seem like Eilish gives a shit anymore about what others have to say. She embraced and owned this new style with every ounce of confidence that she should have.

Instead of attacking her breathtaking photoshoot, bow down to Billie because no one can ever top how hot and powerful she looks in those photos. And if you disagree, ask yourself why you are so concerned with how a 19-year-old dresses before sharing your opinions.
