TikTok Mating Dances
You’re rushing through campus to get to Bird and study before your PSY 205 exam. You spot an empty table in the sea of busy students, and hurry over to grab it. Before you sit down, you realize someone else has beat you to the punch–that cute Econ major that you check out during every lecture. Instead of fighting over who gets the table, the two of you decide to share and study for your exam together. Before you know it, you’re married with 3 kids, living in a suburb of Massachusetts.
Honestly, that’s just never going to happen.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but in a world dominated by social media, making a romantic connection just doesn’t look like what it did in your parents’ days. I mean realistically nobody is expecting to randomly find love at Bird anymore. So, either your face is going to be buried in your phone, so you don’t even see the table, or you’re just going to fight that Econ bro instead of sharing. Gone are the days of spontaneously meeting someone in real life; instead, we resort to dating apps and social media.
C’mon, we all do it. We get all dressed up for a night out at Harry’s, and then spend an hour or so scrolling through all your saved TikTok audios in hopes of making the perfect sexy video that seduces everyone who follows you on TikTok.
Are we all just becoming those cute peacocks that dance around to attract a mate?
First of all, meeting people IRL is just like, really fucking intimidating. Everyone is bolder over the internet, especially when hitting on people, and making flirty TikToks is no exception. You’re no longer dealing with real-time reactions from people; you’re just looking good and feeling confident before you hit upload, and it is so much easier to respond to a sexy comment on social media than it is to deal with one in-person. Plus, you unfortunately can’t block weird men in real life, but you can very much do that on the Internet!
Second of all, getting ready and making fun, cute TikToks with your friends before you go out is a major confidence booster and also a fun bonding moment!
Gone are the days of bonding over a t-shirt or the book you’re checking out–instead you get a heart emoji comment or an add on Snapchat. Now, starting a college romance looks like putting up Syracuse merch in the background or adding a #GoOrange to your posts to attract fellow students.
So ruffle those feathers and pick your sexiest Lady Gaga song, it’s time to make a TikTok.
