Syracuse University’s Black Box Players has built a long track record of highly entertaining theater. Whether it’s giving a voice to rising SU students producing original plays or bringing new life to more mainstream plays, Black Box Players is must see theater.
Black Box Players’ stated mission is to support and collaborate with student creatives by producing engaging, and challenging artistic opportunities for SU and the greater community.
This past fall’s production, Men > Women, by SU student and playwright Salma Mahmou, featured an all-star cast of SU students. This original play follows a young girl navigating adulthood in a world that resists women's empowerment.
This fall semester also saw the production “Tick, tick...BOOM!”, which is billed as the semi-autobiographical musical by “Rent’s” Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning composer whose writing defined a generation on Broadway.
Coming next is Lucy Prebble’s Olivier Award winning play “The Effect,” which is described as “psychology meets science in a thrilling and tender exploration of love, trust and mental health.”
Black Box Players provides students a powerful platform to showcase their artistic abilities. They encourage both seasoned actors and non-drama majors to participate. The diverse set of skills and backgrounds makes the productions even more powerful.
According to Weller Dorff, serving as artistic director of Black Box Players has been one of the highlights of his time at SU.
Whether you’re looking for a new challenge, or a highly entertaining night out, Black Box Players is a true SU gem!
