Book: The Lesser Dead

Christopher Buehlman manages to spin a tale of pale-faced, canine-toothed bloodsuckers not at all reminiscent of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight trilogy in this 1970s-based novel, out Oct. 7. Vampire Joey Peacock preys on New York City’s mortals only to realize that another branch of his kind lurks in the subways. Just try to get over Peacock’s vanilla name.

Game: The Evil Within

The U.S. rendition of Japan’s Psycho Break follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos on his journey of survival. After a violent injury-induced “nap,” Castellanos awakens in an unhinged world among the dead. Shinji Mikami revealed plans for this latest RPG—role-playing game—in 2012. Prepare for an ominous and horrifying adventure that’s all under your and your controller’s command starting Oct. 14.

Film: Dracula Untold

Out Oct. 17, the prequel to Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula reveals how the title character transforms from family man into vampire. Director Gary Shore incorporates mythology and history so fluidly that you’ll wonder why you ever stopped believing in the undead. Watch as Drac morphs from human to Count between bouts of killings and embraces. Check your pulse throughout—your heart just might stop, too.
