The Best Places to Thrift Shop In Syracuse
Anyone who knows me knows that one of my favorite things to do, at pretty much any time, is to go thrifting. Now, I don’t know about you but when I first heard Macklemore’s single “Thrift Shopping”, I did not expect that it would actually become one of my favorite things to do.
Thrifting has become something that many people, especially broke college students have started doing more and more frequently. Selling old clothes has turned into a billion-dollar industry, and its popularity has only continued to rise over the past couple of years.
With vintage style and clothing regaining its appeal and turning more mainstream, it’s hard to resist hitting up the local thrift store. The process of thrifting has turned into a game where you have to hunt and search to find the hidden gems. The second me and my friends walk into the nearest Salvation Army or Thrifty Shopper, it’s game on.
Some might say that I have a few too many jeans jackets in my closet, but how could I leave them in the store when they were only five dollars? One for every day of the week right? The idea of buying used clothes has had some negative stigma attached to it in the past, but the days of being skeeved out by used clothing is behind us.
As broke college students, we all know that getting inexpensive clothes that also are trendy, is most definitely the move. If you want to find the best stuff, (which I know we all do), it’s important to know the day of the week you’re going to go. If you go at the right time, lots of thrift stores will have half off the entire store or they’ll start to restock with new items. I can proudly say I’ve never spent more than 10 dollars on any item I’ve gotten, and that in itself I think is an accomplishment. The thrift store is also the perfect place to find a cute and affordable look for your next themed mixer.
Syracuse definitely isn’t lacking in thrift stores so if you’re in need of places to go near campus, you won’t have any trouble finding them. Trust me when I say, with a little patience and optimism, thrifting will become you and your friends’ new favorite hobby, and you’ll stay on that college budget too.
One of my favorite spots to hit is Thrifty shopper; located on West Seneca Turnpike in Syracuse. This is where I’ve found some of my favorite “gems” like my go-to pair of sunglasses and my red Nike turtleneck. Like any thrift store, it is somewhat chaotic, but that’s all part of the fun.
On South Salina Street you can find the Salvation Army. Whether you have an afternoon to kill or you’re in a time crunch, Salvo is perfect. It can be a hit or miss, but when you find that awesome jean jacket for only eight bucks, it’s all be worth it.
Lastly, if you’re in the mood for less of a hunt and a little more of a guarantee, then definitely checkout Plato’s closet on Erie Boulevard. A little pricier than the rest but if you’re looking for those trendy big name brands, this is the place for you.
