The Awkward-Stages of Post-Making Out with your BFF

Photo by Adham Elsharkawi When you’ve had a bad day, he’s the person that you vent to. When a guy is being an ass to you, he's your go-to person. When it’s that time of the month, he oddly knows (due to your drastic change in attitude). But besides being extreme comfortable with each other, there is still an inevitable sexual tension between you and your male BFF. No matter how hard you try to deny it, it’s there… and it always will be.

First, you claim it’ll never happen. “We’re best friends,” you constantly say. “We don’t think of each other like that.” But one night, it happens. You’re at a bar and he’s inevitably there too (since you’re besties). A few drinks later you guys are locking eyes and the next moment you’re locking lips. At the time, it’s great. For the majority of the night everything feels fine. But when you wake up the next morning, you realize you hooked up with your best friend. Yikes. Shit.

Everything is ruined. You guys were so close. You told each other everything. Where do you stand now? Before you cover your eyes with your sheets and try to shut out all your problems, just remember that there are a few positive things that come out of hooking up with your best friend.

  1. You get feedback on your skills.

Some of us may be a little insecure when it comes to hooking up. Too much lip biting. Not enough tongue. Drowning in saliva. Awkward hand placement (the list goes on). Any time you hook up with someone, you’re putting yourself out there for critique. But, if you hook up with your best friend, you can at least count on some honest feedback. If you are insecure about your make out abilities, your best friend is bound to hook you up with a few pointers. Even if you think you've mastered the skill, there is always room for improvement.

  1. The sexual tension disappears.

Some claim that people of the opposite sex can never be friends. While I disagree with that, I do think that sexual tension between friends of the opposite sex is very common. Hooking up with your best friend will get rid of the ever present sexual tension you may be feeling. So congrats, the previous tension no longer exists… hopefully.

  1. You finally get some answers.

You’ve heard it a million times... “You guys would be so cute together!” I’m sure it’s crossed your mind. Would it be weird if we dated? Would it be weirdly not weird? What if you don't feel anything, or you too confused (drunk) to process what's going on? Who knows, you may have been been waiting for this moment since you were six years old. You probably imagined fireworks going off as you guys shared that first kiss, and at least in your subconscious, everything seemed to make sense. No matter the outcome, you’ve gotten answers, which is better than not knowing.

The point is, there's no reason to freak out post-makeout with your pal. Good things can come from hooking up with your best friend. The trouble arises when you two are on opposite pages. For example, if you’re officially in love and he’s officially creeped out because he feels like he just made out with his sister, you may have a problem on your hands. This inconsistency and potential miscommunication in your reactions may lead to an unfortunate rocky period in your friendship. But before you jump to conclusions and think that your life is over, run through the list. Maybe some good did come from your (likely drunken) behavior. Maybe.
