Who TF Is Jon Bellion?
Since the Block Party lineup was released, SU students have not talked about anything else. While this could be an attempt to forget about our tough Final Four loss (it still hurts), the performers are actually worth the hype.
The Chainsmokers and Chance the Rapper are headlining the show. Oh, and Jon Bellion will be there too.
Poor, poor Jon Bellion. No one knows the dude, no one cares about the dude, no ones gonna even show up for the dude.
To be quite honest, we barely knew anything about him, but we did our research so you can seem informed about music culture, too.
Jon Bellion, born and raised in Long Island, destined to be a pop singer-songwriter… not sure how that happened. Despite claims on Twitter that he “can’t read music," he successfully wrote the chorus to the song “The Monster” by Eminem as well as “Trumpets” by Jason Derulo. Of course, no one knows that.
Being a songwriter can be pretty effing disappointing. Let me explain.
Songwriters write music for artists that gain full attention and recognition for lyrics they didn’t even write. As if that doesn't suck enough, they also make essentially no money, while the performing artists make millions of dollars a night for singing those lyrics on stage.
As most songwriters do, Bellion hides behind the fame humbly while Rhianna belts “I’m friends with the monster that’s under by bed." If this line doesn’t reflect the fate of all songwriters, I’m not sure what else can.
So when you show up to Block Party happily exhausted (but still hammered), give some respect to Jon Bellion as he opens the show. He’s just tryna write music, man. That's better than what Drake has been doing these days.
