Yoga for Sexual Health

When we think yoga, we think of connecting with the body and the ending to Tae Bo’s fitness video. Aside from Billy Blank’s hot sweaty bod telling us we can do it, yoga really is about connecting with your body. But who knew that connecting with your body could also connect you to someone else? Yoga enhances sex for men and women in many ways. Gabrielle Garofalo, a yoga instructor-in-training at Lotus Life Yoga Center, explains these benefits. “The postures have many physical benefits, including ones that will increase flexibility and strength, both of which can have their benefits in the bedroom,” says Garofalo. With that being said, these three yoga positions suggested by Garofalo just may be the new remedy for your sex life:

Tadasana (Mountain Pose):

“In this pose you learn to stand on your own two feet,” explains Garofalo. “While it may not seem like a challenging pose, it can be the most difficult.” For this pose, the feet are grounding into the floor as your legs are engaged and have internal rotation. The core is lifted and as shoulders are rolled back, energy shines through the heart center. Garofalo shares, “To have a healthy sex life you have to be able to understand the subtlety of the body, and be able to stand on your own two feet.”

Balasana (Child’s Pose):

A basic and easy move, this pose benefits the body and mind. It is great for opening the hips but is also able to quiet the mind. We are often distracted in our lives, taking us away from the moment of sex, but this pose brings us back. Garofalo adds, “In practicing yoga one can train the mind to be more in the moment, enhancing sexual encounters.”

Child Pose

Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand):

This shoulder stand pose allows the heart to pump blood more easily to the head, allowing the blood less work to pump blood and have the flow to be used towards the mind. “This pose relieves fatigue, calms the mind, and lessens symptoms of anxiety. Shoulder stand is also said to be helpful for fertility,” says Garofalo. By easing anxiety symptoms, we can clear our mind and focus on the body.

Practicing these three yoga poses will ultimately enhance your sensual pleasure. You’ll become more flexible, connected, and confident—and start noticing the changes in bed.
