The Dorming Wars

As most of us SU students know, housing selection happened a few weeks ago. And it was absolute hell.

Chaotic and stressful dorm arrangements are nothing new to Syracuse. Remember how literally 200 sophomores were kicked out of DellPlain earlier this year to make room for the overflow of freshmen? But even besides those kinds of fiascos, the whole dorm selection system SU uses is painfully flawed and not functional at all.

Assigning students random time slots to pick where they want to live sounds, in theory, like a fair and equal method to pick housing, right? But when there’s logistically not enough dorms on main campus to house students, people with later time slots are forced to live on South Campus, even if they don’t want to. And once South Campus fills up, there are quite a number of students left with – well, nothing. Literally nowhere to live. Now that’s an issue.

Something as essential as housing, especially for students as young as sophomores, should not be this uncertain and unpredictable. SU needs to step up and provide more stability in their dorm and housing system in the future so that picking housing doesn’t feel like a war every year.
