Everything You Should Know About Kygo

full The entire school (and twitterverse) was buzzing when University Union released this years Block Party line-up. In case you haven’t yet emerged from winter hiberation, 50 Cent will be headlining, and whether you complained about him being the headliner or not, you know you’re going to have an amazing time licking imaginary lollipops to the beat of “Candy Shop,” and maybe even hitting that imaginary stripper pole when “In Da Club” comes on. Rae Sremmurd will be there too, and I can’t wait to hear his two biggest hits, “No Type” and “No Flex Zone.”

Most importantly, though, Kygo is performing. Who is Kygo, you ask? Kygo is one of the biggest up and coming DJs out there. Because of his different and funky vibe, Kygo is widely popular in the EDM world. Some may even say that he’s the best DJ out there right now. (Check out his Soundcloud, too — it’s my favorite profile to listen to right now.) #PHire

Now how do EDM artists make it in the real world, when everyone now-a- days has access to creating their own beats and remixes on their laptop? Kygo, aka Kyrre Gørvell-Dahill (you can see where he got his name from now), is a Norwegian DJ in his early 20s. Although he was interested in music at an early age, it was listening to Avicii that made him want to start creating electronic music. He began in his bedroom, putting his remixes on places like SoundCloud and Youtube. These remixes took the word viral to the next level. His remix of Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire,” now has over 26 million plays on SoundCloud, and 40 million YouTube views.

Kygo then began to play at festivals and would sometimes open up for his inspiration, Avicii. At one point he even had to replace Avicii at TomorrowWorld, which made Kygo even more well known. Musicians began to catch wind of him, and Chris Martin of Coldplay even asked him to create a remix of their song “Midnight.” Finally, in 2014 Kygo released his own original track, “Firestone,” which has 125 million plays on Spotify, making it the 4th most played song on the app worldwide. You can also find his song “Stole the Show” on Spotify as a Kygo original.

You know that Kygo has officially made it big because he will be performing at Coachella this weekend, as well as at Firefly music festival, Lollapalooza, Osheaga, and other big festivals. I have a feeling that Kygo is going to steal the show at Block Party and be everyone’s favorite performer. If you hadn’t heard of him before, here are some of my favorite remixes that you should definitely listen to before the concert rolls around. He’s going to be a great performer, and I can’t. Fucking. Wait.

1. Marvin Gaye – Sexual Healing (Kygo Remix). This was the first Kygo song I heard so it has a soft spot in my heart, and would definitely say it’s my favorite.

4. The XX – Angels (Kygo Remix). The XX is one my favorite artists already, so I was so excited when I discovered this remix.
